This two-day Advanced Life Support (Level 2) course is accredited by the Australian Resuscitation Council and is suitable for healthcare professionals including doctors, medical students, nurses, and paramedics.

A two-day course with the focus on the developing advanced skills in managing a deteriorating patient and cardiac arrest. The ALS-2 course is designed for healthcare professionals who would be expected to apply those skills taught as part of their clinical duties, or to teach them on a regular basis.

 

The course is conducted over two consecutive days:

 

Day 1: 8:00am to 5:30pm (approx.)

Day 2: 8:00am to 4:00pm (approx.)

 

There will be a morning tea break, lunch break and afternoon tea break on each day. We can cater for most people who have food allergies or special dietary requirements (please advise us prior to the course).

ALS-2 Course Content:

The ALS-2 course is very intensive and candidates are sent an ALS-2 manual prior to the course. Candidates are required to complete a pre-course multiple choice question paper to guide preparation.

 

Learning outcomes:

 

The ALS-2 course teaches the knowledge and skills as follows:

 

• Recognition, assessment and management of the deteriorating patient using a structured ABCDE approach (aiming to prevent cardiac arrest).

Treat cardiac and/or respiratory arrest, including manual defibrillation.

Management of life-threatening arrhythmias.

Preparing and planning for post resuscitation care.

Care for the deteriorating patient or patient in cardiac and/or respiratory arrest in special circumstances such as anaphylaxis.

Lead a team, work as a team member, and use structured communication skills including giving an effective handover.

Consideration for end-of-life decision making.


 

Candidates who successfully complete the course will receive an Australian Resuscitation Council ALS2 certificate valid for 4 years.

 

Please note: Candidates must attend the entire face-to-face elements of the ALS-2 course. A candidate’s competency is assessed during the course and a multiple-choice exam is marked. A candidate is not guaranteed an automatic pass merely for attending the course.

 

Candidates who successfully complete the course will receive an Australian Resuscitation Council ALS1 certificate valid for 4 years.

 

 

Eligibility:

All applicants must hold a professional healthcare qualification or be in training for a professional healthcare qualification.

 

Appropriate participants include doctors, professional paramedics, and nurses working in acute care areas (eg. ED, CCU, ICU, HDU, operating theatres, acute medical admissions units) or on resuscitation / medical emergency / ICU outreach teams.

 

Prior skills and competence in CPR are an essential prerequisite to attending the course. While the course covers advanced resuscitation skills it is also designed to develop leadership and team skills in managing such emergencies.

 

Our experienced ALS-2 course instructors are fully accredited by the Australian Resuscitation Council, providing high quality, interactive education for our candidates.

 

Our diverse faculty comprises a mix of practicing doctors, nurses and paramedics. Two instructors and a course co-ordinator will be present on each training day.
